Why scales miss
Smart scales and InBody don't measure fat directly. They send a small electrical current through your body and estimate fat from the resistance, which changes with how much water you're holding, what you ate, and the time of day.
Body Fat Scanner is built by Hybrid Athlete Guy, who has spent 15 years testing DEXA, InBody, hydrostatic weighing, calipers, and home scales. When he drank 16 ounces of water between InBody scans, his reading went up about 1%. Another 20 ounces pushed it up about 1% more. Here's what each method said about him at two different points.
2024 · 190–193 lb bodyweight
Visible abs in any lighting, veins in the arms. This photo was taken the same day DEXA had him at 7.5%. His estimate: 10–12%.
"You've got that classic 'I lift heavy but I also refuse to skip Taco Tuesday' aesthetic going on. The shoulders are definitely the stars of the show here, leaving your chest struggling to keep up with the width. It's nice to see a six-pack, even if the bottom two are playing a shy game of peek-a-boo under that slight layer of softness. You look solid, but let's be real, that chest hair is doing some serious contouring work to make the pecs look deeper than they are. You're in good shape, just don't exhale too hard or we might lose that definition."
2016–2018 · 205–210 lb bodyweight
Upper abs only in good lighting, a clear layer of fat over the midsection, love handles. His estimate: 16–18%.
"I see the chest and shoulders are showing up for work, but it looks like your abs are still on their lunch break. You've got a solid 2-pack trying to make an appearance, while the rest of your core is playing hide and seek and clearly winning. You've perfectly mastered the 'I go to the gym but also to the brewery right after' look. You're not out of shape, you're just built for comfort, not for showing off at the beach."
Body Fat Scanner landed inside his estimate both times. DEXA came in low both times.

Simple answers before your first scan.
Body Fat Scanner estimates from what your body looks like: muscle definition, where you carry fat, and vascularity. Scales and InBody estimate from electrical impedance, which shifts with water, food, and time of day, so their number can move when your body hasn't. The biggest variable in a photo estimate is the photo. Use the same lighting, distance, and poses each time and your check-ins stay comparable.
Use at least one front and one back photo. For the best read, add all four views the app walks you through: front relaxed, front flexed, back relaxed, and back flexed. Wear minimal clothing, like shorts or a swimsuit, and take your photos in the same spot with similar lighting each time.
Your photos are used to run your scan and save it to your history. They're sent to an AI model for analysis and aren't used for ads or tracking. The full details are in the privacy policy.
