Why You Should Walk Between Sets Instead of Sitting

Most lifters sit on a bench or lean on the squat rack between sets.

And this is fine if you're a pure powerlifter or weightlifter.

But for almost everyone else, you should stay moving between sets.

Walking between sets is a simple habit that can improve performance, recovery, and mobility and even help with fat loss.

Here’s why you should get up and move during rest periods:

1. Walking keeps your muscles warm

Sitting between sets can cause your muscles to tighten up, especially for lower body lifts.

Walking keeps your blood flowing, maintains muscle temperature, and reduces stiffness between sets.

This helps you stay loose and ready for your next lift.

2. Walking helps clear fatigue

When you lift heavy, your muscles accumulate waste products like lactate. Walking helps flush out metabolic byproducts faster than sitting, improving recovery between sets.

This means:

  • You’ll feel fresher going into your next set.
  • You’ll maintain better movement quality.
  • You may be able to lift more weight or get more reps.

Small details like this add up over a full training session.

3. Walking improves mobility between sets

Lifting compresses your joints, especially in exercises like squats and deadlifts.

Walking between sets keeps your hips, knees, and ankles mobile, preventing excessive stiffness.

If you struggle with joint tightness mid-workout, sitting around between sets probably isn’t helping.

4. Walking helps regulate your breathing

Heavy lifting, especially big compound movements, can spike your heart rate and leave you breathing hard.

Walking between sets helps you:

  • Regulate your breathing faster than sitting still.
  • Maintain better posture for proper ribcage expansion.
  • Recover quicker so you’re ready for your next lift.

Instead of sitting and taking shallow breaths, walking helps your heart rate settle more efficiently.

5. Walking keeps your focus sharp

This is a big one that not enough people fully appreciate.

Your phone is a massive distraction.

You likely spend much of the day on it (or on a computer), so use your time in the gym to give yourself a break from it.

It’s easy to get distracted when you sit between sets and stare at your phone.

Walking keeps your mind engaged with your workout without letting you mentally drift.

It can also be a good time to reset, visualize your next set, and mentally prepare for your lift.

6. Walking burns extra calories and increases daily step count

If you’re looking to burn more calories with minimal effort (who isn't?), walking between sets adds up over time.

  • If you take 60-120 seconds of walking between sets during an hour-long workout, that can add up to 30+ extra minutes of movement.
  • Over multiple sessions per week, this translates to thousands of extra steps and more calories burned, without having to do extra cardio.
  • If fat loss is your goal, this is an easy way to increase daily energy expenditure without impacting your strength gains.

Every bit of movement counts, and walking between sets is one of the easiest ways to sneak in more steps throughout the day.

Walking between sets is a massive "cheat code" when on a cut and is still a very good idea when maintaining or bulking.

I have a small walking treadmill in my home gym and I hop on there between sets and easily get an extra 3-5k steps in during a 40-60 minute lifting session.

If you're running strength and cardio side-by-side, you’ll want to avoid this common hybrid training mistake. It’s one of the fastest ways to burn out or stall out, especially if you're new to combining both.

How to incorporate walking between sets

If you work out at a gym, simply walk around between sets.

If you work out at home, just walk around your property or neighborhood. Or buy yourself a small walking pad (basically a mini treadmill) and hop on that between sets.

This isn’t about turning your lifting session into cardio. It’s about maximizing your time and improving recovery and performance by adding small, effortless movement to your day.

The bottom line

Walking between sets is a simple, easy change that:

  • Keeps muscles warm
  • Flushes fatigue
  • Prevents stiffness
  • Regulates breathing
  • Keeps you focused
  • Increases daily movement and burns extra calories

Try it in your next session and see how you feel.

Do you already walk between sets, or do you sit?

Capacity Training

I built Capacity Training to plan your running and your lifting together, with 2 or 3 lift days a week and exercises picked from your equipment. Log your sets and it picks your next weights: earn it and the weight goes up, struggle and it holds or comes down.
